Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) incorporates serious illnesses like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. There is an increasing desire for alternatives to drugs that will help alleviate symptoms and delay progression of these conditions.
Study Details: Mice with an anti-inflammatory gene switched off (IL-10-/-) develop spontaneous colitis. In this study one mild (C57BL/6J) and one severe (BALB/c) strain was used. At age 3-4 weeks, before onset of disease, the mice were fed Aquamin (Lithothamnion calcareum) or control (nothing) and monitored for 25 weeks. Measurements included DAI (disease activity index), colon histology by autopsy, inflammatory proteins, colon and spleen cytokine and enzyme analysis.
Results & Conclusions:
- Aquamin treatment resulted in delayed disease onset
- In the colonic fluid, serum amyloid A (inflammatory protein) and IL-1β were significantly reduced in Aquamin mice withmild disease type (Fig. 1)
- DAI was markedly delayed in Aquamin treated mice comparedto controls (Fig. 2)
- Aquamin mice had significantly lower mortality (Fig. 3)
- In the spleens of treated mice there was significantly lessTNFα and IL-2. Although there was no significant effect on chronic disease, natural Aquamin was shown here to effectively delay onset and reduce symptoms of mild-type Colitis
