Background:

Aquamin has previously been shown to exert beneficial effects on the symptoms of osteoarthritis decreasing pain and stiffness and increasing mobility and walking distance . Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to relieve the pain and discomfort of osteoarthritis but often have unwelcome side effects. This study demonstrates that it is possible to reduce NSAID usage when taking the natural supplement, Aquamin.

Study Detail:

• 29 subjects suffering from moderate to severe osteoarthritis.
• 12-week parallel group study. Aquamin F vs Placebo.
• Subjects were required to reduce NSAID use by 50% after 2 weeks on the study • Subjects were required to stop NSAID use after 4 weeks on the study
• No NSAID use was allowed for the remaining 8 weeks of the study

Measurements:

  • – Rescue medication (acetaminophen 325g)
  • – WOMAC scores (pain, stiffness, activities & composite (total scores))
  • – 6 Minute Walking Distance (6MWD)
  • – Range of Motion

Results:

  • At 50% NSAID reduction, the Aquamin group showed significantly increased Range of Motion scores
  • Significantly increased 6MWD (Figure below)
